Scanoskin is a new imaging modality for the assessment of the severity of burns injury. It brings the power of tissue spectroscopy analysis to the help of identification of burn wounds depth in a rapid, convenient and cost effective system.

Assessing the depth of a burn is essential to decide without delay the course of treatment that will speed up recovery while minimising the risk of scarring. Unfortunately this depends vastly on the assessor, who can only rely on their naked eye and experience: even the best trained and most experienced clinicians do not exceed 75% accuracy, as reported in the literature 1.

Using a standard DSLR camera and dedicated accessories and software, healthcare professionals are now able to access additional visual information to complement their clinical observation and reach a more accurate assessment of the burn depth.

As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality. It does not replace the real world by a simulated one as in Virtual Reality.
